The Workshop

This Night Photography workshop will feature one night of photography at Mono Lake, one on the Conway Summit, one at Bodie Ghost Town, and one at either on Tioga Pass, or another location in the Eastern Sierra depending on the group’s interests. This small group workshop is open to all levels, basic photo skills, including familiarity with shooting RAW in manual mode with a DSLR is recommended.

The workshop takes place just before the full moon, which will provide us with lots of moonlight to work wth. These conditions are optimal for people with little night photography experience, and for those who are more interested in light painting or star trails than photographing the Milky Way. Topics covered will include: Optimizing night photography exposure, Live-View focusing at night, high ISO testing, composition n low light, and light painting.

There will be classroom sessions each afternoon, with lecture, image development, and critique f the previous night’s work. With a 6:1 student teacher ratio, there will be time for everyone to work with Lance and Chris one on one in the field.

Those with more experience can concentrate on creating portfolio quality images with guidance from Chris and Lance.  Techniques and inspiration will be constantly discussed, demonstrated and put into practice. We will all work closely together, sharing our knowledge and experience.

Getting There

Mono Lake at nightThe Eastern Sierra is isolated. The closest major airport is Reno, NV- 120 miles away. Driving from Reno is about 2 1/2 hours. San Francisco is about a 6 hour drive through Yosemite National Park, and Los Angeles is about 6 hours away by car. It’s well worth the effort to get there. If you are interested in carpooling or sharing a rental car from Reno or the Bay Area, let me know, and we will try to connect you with someone.

Workshop participants stay at nearby resorts, hotels or campgrounds in or near Lee Vining. We recommend Lakeview Lodge in Lee Vining. The EL Mono Motel or  Murphey’s are also good options. In either case, you should reserve a room as soon as you confirm your spot in the workshop.
