This workshop will be jam-packed with both field and classroom instruction. We will spend time in the classroom each day, learning the basics of Night Photography and reviewing images from the previous night’s shoot. During classroom sessions we will focus on developing our images with Adobe Lightroom while also looking at the images of historic and contemporary night photographers. After a short dinner break, we’ll head out to photograph in the cemetery. We’ll have three to four hours to photograph each night. While in the field each night, photographic techniques and creative inspiration will be discussed, demonstrated and put into practice. We will all work closely together, sharing our knowledge and observations.

Concord Cemetery headstoneFriday night will be spent getting the fundamentals of night photography nailed down- camera settings, composing and focusing in the dark, and exposure. Once students are comfortable making images in this environment, light painting techniques will be introduced. On Saturday night, after reviewing our images from the previous night, we’ll return to the cemetery to photograph, this time using more added light to supplement our images. It’s rumored that a certain abbreviated equestrian will make an appearance. That’s right, Ichabod Crane’s nemesis will pay a visit to his old stomping grounds and strike a pose for us on Saturday night. Sunday, our final night will be spent refining our technique, building on what’s been learned on the previous two night’s work. For those who have taken to light painting, more advanced techniques will be introduced.

Lance brings his twenty-five years of experience with night photography to the workshop and shares his passion for the subject with inspiring slides shows of historical and contemporary night photography as well as informative lectures and critiques. We will examine the basic skills necessary for Night Photography, high quality digital image capture, and RAW file processing. Film photographers are welcome, but should contact Lance in advance of registration.
